What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) belongs to a group of substances called cannabinoids, which occur naturally only in cannabis plants. CBD is the second most important of these after THC. Unlike THC, research into CBD and its therapeutic potential has been unjustly neglected in the past. In recent years, however, it has come to light that it has very interesting pharmacological effects. Chemically, CBD and THC are closely related, but CBD is not a resinous liquid but a solid. CBD is non-psychoactive, i.e. it has almost no effect on human cannabinoid receptors and acts as an inhibitor of many of the effects of THC.
Medical uses of CBD – Cannabidiol
Scientific research has shown that cannabidiol (wiki) protects nerve cells against oxygen deprivation and against various poisons, including alcohol poisoning, as it slows cellular aging. CBD could be very valuable for the treatment of stroke and intracranial traumatic brain injury. It has proven effective in treating neurodegenerative disorders caused by prions. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and antipsychotic effects. It promotes immunity and has a beneficial effect on the body’s natural processes.
Other therapeutic uses of cannabidiol include epilepsy, diabetes, anxiety disorders, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, nausea and also as an alternative or aid in the treatment of cancer.
What is cannabigerol (CBG)?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a type of cannabinoid extracted from the cannabis plant. It is often referred to as the mother of all cannabinoids. This is because the other cannabinoids are derived from cannabigerol acid (CBGA), which is the acidic form of CBG.
CBG is found in smaller amounts in cannabis plants than the other cannabinoids. Only 1 % of CBG can be found in most strains of the plant, compared to 20 to 25 % of CBD or 25 to 30 % of THC.1
This makes consumer products derived from this cannabinoid rare and often expensive. However, the popularity of CBG is growing due to the many potential benefits this cannabinoid offers.
Potential benefits of CBG
Like CBD, CBG is mainly used for pain relief without the intoxicating effect of cannabinoids like THC.
Research also shows that CBG may have therapeutic effects as well. However, human studies are sparse in this regard and further research is needed in this area.
Some promising animal studies show that CBG could eventually be useful for treating the following diseases: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Glaucoma, Huntington’s Disease, and Fighting Cancer Cells. In a 2014 study, researchers observed the effects of CBG on rats with colon cancer. They observed that CBG showed promise in blocking receptors that cause cancer cell growth and inhibiting the growth of colon cancer cells. It was also found that CBG acts as a neuroprotective agent and protects nerve cells in the brain from damage. It also improves motor deficits and preserves striatal neurons from 3-nitropropionic acid toxicity.4
